Underarms need extra TLC? We've got you.

The unspoken truth about sensitive skin is that it doesn't stop at the neck. In fact, our underarms can be just as sensitive—and thanks to our deodorants and antiperspirants, they're subjected to active ingredients. (And don't blame it all on aluminum—even some "natural deodorants" can be irritating).

Luckily, there are formulas created specifically for sensitive skin, so they won't cause irritation. Still if you're extra reactive, "Consulting with a dermatologist can provide personalized recommendations based on specific skin sensitivities and concerns," says Michelle Henry, New York-based board-certified dermatologist and Degree partner. Below, find 15 of the best deodorants for sensitive skin (that actually work).

Salt & Stone's chic little deo is one of those "if you know, you know" products you might see in the background of a fancy home tour. And it happens to work very well, too; even former antiperspirant devotees swear by it.

It all comes down to the ingredients. In some cases, it's an integral part: fragrance. "Sensitive skin can react negatively to the fragrances commonly found in deodorants and antiperspirants, resulting in symptoms such as itching, redness, or a rash," explains Henry. "Additionally, the inclusion of harsh chemicals like alcohol, preservatives, or dyes in some formulas can further contribute to skin irritation for those with sensitive skin."

Short answer: It depends. Longer answer: "While aluminum-containing products are generally considered safe, they have the potential to cause irritation or allergic reactions in some people," explains Henry. "For individuals with sensitive skin, it is advisable to select deodorant and antiperspirant products specifically formulated for sensitive skin or labeled as 'hypoallergenic.' These products typically have reduced fragrance content and contain milder ingredients to minimize the likelihood of irritation."

With any product, the derm also recommends a patch test first. "Conducting a patch test by applying a small amount of the product to a small area of skin and observing for any adverse reactions is recommended before using it on a larger area," she explains. "If irritation occurs, discontinue use and seek alternative options."

The main thing, says the derm, is not to use something that irritates your skin—even if it "works" otherwise. "Ultimately, it is crucial to pay attention to individual skin reactions and choose products accordingly to minimize the risk of irritation," says Henry.
